Mesh: Prescribe like a drug

Usher introduced the first polypropylene mesh in 1968 as a method to achieve tension-free hernia repair. It took less than a decade for the worldwide adoption of the mesh to replace most anatomical repairs. Mesh is one of the most commonly used implants in surgery today. Approximately 20 million hernias are repaired every year worldwide (1), meshplasty being the commonest kind of hernia surgery. (see Table 1)
