Xenotransplantation research and the ‘international journal of Surgery’

Only 50-60 years ago, when chronic organ failure had been diagnosed, there was no hope for most patients as there were few treatment options that physicians could offer. A revolution in medicine began with Willem Kolff ’s development in the 1940s of dialysis – with so-called ‘artificial kidneys’. With the introduction of vascular shunts by Belding Scribner in 1960, a slowly increasing number of patients with end-stage kidney disease had a chance to survive a little longer. When kidney allotransplantation b egan to be carried out, first largely in France and the USA, medicine entered a new era.
