For decades we have been aware of marked black-white differences in the prevalence of hypertension as well as susceptibility to target organ damage and clinical events including heart failure and stroke.1,2 Justin Thomas and colleagues explored differences in the prevalence and incidence of hypertension between blacks and whites from the CARDIA study.3 Whereas there have been many studies of racial differences in hypertension prevalence, there have been far fewer long-term follow-up of disparities in hypertension incidence.
