'Breast cancer won't kill ya in the breast': Broaching a rationale for chemotherapy during the surgical consultation for early-stage breast cancer

Conversation analytic research on end-of-life matters has illuminated our understanding of how medical professionals talk about death with terminally ill patients, revealing how they deliver difficult diagnostic news, topicalize the possibility of death, explore patients' feelings about dying, and discuss plans for end-of-life care [1 –7]. This research shows that medical practitioners exhibit significant caution around the topic of death and dying when speaking with patients who are nearing the end of their lives, if they discuss it at all.
