Communicating with Diverse Patients: How Patient and Clinician Factors Affect Disparities

The 2003 Institute of Medicine ’s Unequal treatment: Confronting racial and ethnic disparities in health care summarized a legacy of unequal healthcare in the U.S. [1] The publication highlighted disparities in outcomes for most leading causes of death and disability among African Americans compared to Whites [1]. Limited data on the status of other racial/ethnic groups, a lack of understanding of the etiologic factors contributing to unequal care, and a sense of urgency to “do something” were compelling lessons from this report [1].
