Maternal experiences of trauma and hair cortisol in early childhood in a prospective cohort

Traumatic life events, such as natural disasters, sudden death of a loved one, and childhood abuse, are commonplace and critical issues for public health (Herrenkohl et al., 2015; Magruder et al., 2016). Over two-thirds of US adults have been exposed to at least one potentially traumatic event (Goldstein et al., 2016), and cumulative lifetime trauma exposure is associated with serious physical and mental health outcomes across the lifespan (Anda et al., 2006; McLaughlin et al., 2010; Suglia et al., 2015).
