What is the relationship between rejection and self-harm or suicidality in adulthood?

Suicide and self-harm are major health concerns with over 800,000 people worldwide dying by suicide annually (World  Health Organization, 2014), with 6,639 recorded in the UK last year (Office for National Statistics, 2017). As suicide is one of the leading causes of death (Rudd et al., 2013) identifying risk factors for this behaviour has become a global health priority (World Health Organization, 2014). Suicidal ideation and self-harm are associated with a greater risk of suicide (Bergen et al., 2012; Owens et al., 2014; Ribeiro et al., 2016).
