Is teachers ’ mental health and wellbeing associated with students’ mental health and wellbeing?
The mental health of children and young people appears to be deteriorating (Collishaw, 2015). A recent survey in England found 37% of girls and 15% of boys in Year 10 (14-15 years) were psychologically distressed (Department for Education 2016). Positive mental health and wellbeing during adolescence is associated with positive social relations, the development of a healthy lifesty le, reduced risk of adverse socioeconomic outcomes, psychiatric disorders, self-harm, and suicide in later life (Hawton and Harriss, 2007, Fergusson and Woodward, 2002, Fava et al., 2010).
