Epidemiology of panic attacks, panic disorder and the moderating role of age: Results from a population-based study

Panic Attacks (PA) are defined as an abrupt surge of intense fear or intense discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes, and during that time four or more of 13 symptoms occur (Craske  et al., 2010). According to DSM-5 criteria (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), a diagnosis of panic disorder (PD) requires the presence of recurrent PA and persistent worry about suffering future attacks and their consequences. Epidemiological studies report a lifetime PD prevalence rate between 1.4 and 4.1% in the adult general population (Dick et al., 1994; Eaton et al., 1994; Weissman et al., 1997).
