Depression literacy and stigma influence how parents perceive and respond to adolescent depressive symptoms

Adolescence is a peak period for the development of depressive disorders (Lewinsohn  et al., 1998), which often continues into adulthood (Rao et al., 1999). In addition to having a negative impact on academic performance, social relationships, and increasing the risk of substance use and suicidality (Lewinsohn et al., 1998; Rao et al., 1999), adolescent depression is associat ed with increased levels of conflict with parents (Lewinsohn et al., 1998). Unhelpful parent-child communication patterns can exacerbate negative emotionality in the adolescent.
