Cognitive biases predict symptoms of depression, anxiety and wellbeing above and beyond neuroticism in adolescence
Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide (WHO, 2017). Research shows that mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety, originate in adolescence (MQ, 2016). Lifetime prevalence in adolescents (13-18-year olds) was reported to be 11% for depression and 32% for anxiety (Avenevoli et al., 2015; Merikangas et al., 2010). Importantl y, earlier onset of depression predicts longer episodes, more severe course, poorer recovery and higher recurrence rates (Dunn and Goodyer; 2006).
