Sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with recurrent breast cancer and previous axillary surgery: A review

Aim: Breast cancer is the most frequently occurring malignancy and the commonest cause of cancer death in women worldwide; with 1 in 8 women developing the disease in their lifetime. Axillary staging provides information on lymph node status which is a significant prognostic indicator; no specific surgical procedure is currently suggested as best practice for recurrent disease. This paper critically reviews literature looking at identification rates of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in patients with locally recurrent breast cancer (LRBC), as well as the effect of previous axillary surgery.
