Misadventure by foley urethral catheter resulting in ureteric obstruction

Background: A 67 year old lady presented to the hospital emergency department with a history of right sided abdominal pain, haematuria, chills and urine bypassing the catheter three days after a catheter change in the community. She had a raised white cell count (16.5 x109/L) and CRP (97mg/L). A CT revealed that the urinary catheter with inflated balloon was within the distal right ureter causing obstruction and moderate hydronephrosis without ureteric rupture.
