Paralytic ileus is a familiar and common diagnosis; often diagnosed postoperatively or seen in the emergency department. The symptoms that indicate the diagnosis, namely constipation, bloating, anorexia, nausea and vomiting, are prevalent and can be vague. However, the symptoms may represent a more serious pathology and can warrant invasive investigations or those that involve radiation exposure.
