Routine pus swabs during incision and drainage of abscesses: Are they worth it?

Aims: 41% of NHS providers are on track for 34% reduction in carbon footprint by 2020. Medical instruments contribute 13% towards NHS England ’s carbon footprint, with 75% from acute services. Cultures during incision and drainage are potential sources of unnecessary CO2 emissions. We aimed to evaluate whether cultures impact management and whether more selective approach could reduce cost/emissions without impacting care.
