The Gent-O ’Clock: Improving patient safety - gentamicin monitoring in an acute receiving surgical ward

Aim: Accurate prescribing and monitoring of gentamicin are important given its high profile side-effects including nephrotoxicity. Junior doctors are tasked with taking serum levels at multiple times during a shift, which may inadvertently get missed. Gent-O ’Clock encompasses four 1-hour windows to alert junior doctors for monitoring. Evaluate the accuracy of gentamicin monitoring within a single General Surgery ward during a receiving week before and after introduction of Gent-O’Clock.
