The concurrent use of probiotic microorganism and collagen hydrogel/scaffold enhances burn wound healing: An in vivo evaluation

Acute thermal injuries cause approximately 300,000 deaths annually with regard to the World Health Organization report [1]. Since burning results considerable loss of fluid and extensive tissue damage, the main functions of skin are impaired. Infection is one of the most common complications related to the burning that increases the local damage in burned wounds; however, life-threatening sepsis result in systemic immunological and inflammatory response impairment [2 –4]. It has been shown that in burns involving more than 40% of the total body surface area, the majority of deaths (75%) are either due to sepsis from wound infection or other infection complications and failure of some vital organs, especially in developing countries [5].
