The Current State of Iodine Nutrition in Filipino School-aged Children

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are the leading causes of mental retardation in childhood and is collectively preventable only if early, appropriate measures are sufficiently taken [16]. These disorders lower the intelligent quotient and impair the psychomotor function in young children. According to Andersson et al. [1], it is estimated that iodine deficiency affects 76 million of school-aged children (SAC) in Southeast Asia, the highest globally. In fact, iodine deficiency was identified by the International Child Development Steering Group as one of the four key global developmental risk factors for children to reach their potentials and which needs urgent intervention [15].
