Doctor's working time

Hello everyone, my girlfriend just started studying medicine, and she's enjoying it so far, but she has a dilemma concerning her future career - it seems to be very hard to combine a doctor's work with personal life. The widespread opinion is that doctors have to work for 60-70 hours a week, and this, to a person like her, who intends to have a family and children, is impossible to attain. The one question I have is - is this opinion true, or maybe it is true in general, but there are some specialities/career options which do not consume so much time and allow for a more liberal work-life balance? In other words, can being a doctor be a regular 8-5 job?
