A recent publication in The Journal demonstrated the opposite findings and showed poor quality of life in patients performing intermittent self-dilation.1 Patients experience pain and discomfort, and have difficulty with urethral self-dilation. They are referred or self-refer to a specialist to discuss surgical options to avoid intermittent catheterization. This finding certainly holds true in my reconstructive practice.
