Correlation of cytokines, BDNF levels, and memory function in patients with opioid use disorder undergoing methadone maintenance treatment

The lifetime prevalence rate of opioid use disorder (OUD) is high —2.1% in the US (Grant et al., 2016) and 0.22% globally (Degenhardt et al., 2014)—and is the cause of substantial public health problems throughout the globe (Degenhardt et al., 2014). The development of OUD is associated with multiple genetic, environmental, and developmental risk factors (Volk ow et al., 2016). In addition to the classical etiology for OUD, emerging evidence also suggests that dysregulated neuroinflammation is involved in the development of addiction (Coller and Hutchinson, 2012).
