The Association Between Body Mass Index and Postpartum Depression: A Population-Based Study

Postpartum depression (PPD) symptomatology reportedly affects between 6.5%-19% of all new mothers (Gaynes et  al., 2005) characterizing it as one of the most common complications associated with childbirth (O'Hara and Wisner, 2014). Because PPD may negatively impact the cognitive and socio-emotional development of the child (Dennis and McQueen, 2009; Stein et al., 2014) and the well-being of the family unit, it is a significant public health concern (Gavin et al., 2005; Gjerdingen and Yawn, 2007).
