A Large Healthcare-Associated Outbreak of Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 1a in a Clinic in Korea

Globally, hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects more than 180 million people, with 3 –4 million new infections per year. HCV infection, one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease, is associated with end-stage cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma [1]. In Korea, the prevalence of HCV is reportedly 0.41% to 2.1%, and it differs depending on target group, age, and region [1, 2]. HCV, a member of the Flaviviridae family, is an enveloped, positive sense single-stranded RNA virus; its genome size is approximately 9.4 kb.
