Human papillomavirus (HPV) shedding in breast milk from African women living with HIV

Little is known about human papillomavirus (HPV) shedding in breast milk. Only few studies have reported this shedding, with conflicting conclusions. HPV was not detected in breast milk by Mammas et al. [1], whereas cutaneous HPV types were identified by Cazzaniga et al. [2] in ductal lavages or breast milk, with a strong reduction of HPV positivity after removal of the superficial layers of the nipple epidermis, suggesting that most of the cutaneous HPV DNA detected in lavage fluids resulted from a contamination by epidermal HPVs.
