A Genome-Wide Association Study of Suicide Attempts and Suicidal Ideation in U.S. Military Veterans

Death by suicide and suicidal behavior (i.e., suicide attempts, plans, or ideation) are major concerns among veterans (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). While military veterans only comprise 8.5% of the U.S. adult population, they account for a disproportionately high percentage (18%) of deaths by suicide (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016). After adjusting for age and gender, risk for suicide is still 21% higher among veterans than civilians (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2016).
