The impact of preoperative cachexia on postoperative length of stay in elderly patients with gastrointestinal cancer

Gastrointestinal cancer treatments mainly involve surgery, and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol is required to reduce surgical stress and accelerate recovery in patients. One of the parameters of ERAS is postoperative length of stay (LOS), and prolonged postoperative LOS has been shown to increase readmission rate [1], decrease overall survival rate [2], and increase hospitalization costs [3]. Therefore, postoperative LOS is a clinically and socially relevant problem.
