Impact of the preoperative use of synbiotics in colorectal cancer patients: a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Colorectal cancer occurs equally in both sexes and, when localized, is often a curable disease. Surgical resection is the primary treatment, removing the affected portion of the intestine and regional lymph nodes [1,2]. However, colonic resection for malignancy is associated with significant postoperative morbidity, reaching 25-30% of cases, often associated with dehiscence of the anastomosis, abdominal infection and fistula formation [2,3].
