Vitamin A supplementation improves the intestinal mucosal barrier and facilitates the expression of tight junction proteins in rats with diarrhea

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2 billion cases of diarrheal disease occur worldwide, and 1.9 million children younger than 5 years of age perish from diarrhea annually, mostly in developing countries [1]. Diarrhea can be classified as acute or persistent based on the course of the disease. Persistent diarrhea (PD), which is also known as chronic diarrhea, refers to diarrhea that persists for more than 2 weeks, leading to a deteriorated nutritional status and a substantial risk of death [2,3].
