CHRNA7 copy number gains are enriched in adolescents with major depressive and anxiety disorders

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental health conditions, with an estimated lifetime prevalence in the United States of 16.2% and 33.7% in adults and 11.7% and 31.9% in adolescents, respectively (Warden et  al., 2007, Bandelow and Michaelis, 2015, Merikangas et al., 2010). Additionally, MDD and anxiety disorders are highly comorbid (Thibaut, 2017). While substantial progress in treating these disorders has been achieved, significant challenges remain, with up to a third of patients with MDD and up to half of those with anxiety disorders never reaching full remission (Philip et al., 2012, Farach et al., 2012).
