Glasses to see beyond visible

This brief review is dealing with the originality of these materials such as their glass-forming properties. This contribution is essentially oriented towards their applications, which are illustrated by the creation of four companies. They have found niches in the business of IR, in bringing to the market original fibres and lenses in the growing sectors of IR cameras as well as sensors for medicine, astronomy and biological applications.RésuméDes verres transmettant dans le domaine de l'infrarouge ont été développés dans la famille des fluorures et des chalcogénures. Le concept de verres est présenté ainsi que les applications. Quatre sociétés ont été créés pour commercialiser ces matériaux, soit sous forme de fibres à configurations diverses, soit sous forme de lentilles moulées. Ces objets optiques ont trouvé des applications dans le secteur des caméras IR et des capteurs pour la médecine, l'astronomie, la biologie.
