A Psychometric Study of the Decisional Conflict Scale in Surrogate Decision Makers

As institutions look to adopt programs and processes that promote shared decision-making, it is important to find measures that adequately assess how such interventions affect patients ’ or surrogates’ ability to make treatment decisions. The Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS) can be a helpful tool because it measures decision uncertainty, the factors that contribute to uncertainty, and perceived effective decision-making [1]. The DCS was originally evaluated in populations makin g decisions about influenza immunization and breast cancer screening, and the scale was found to be both valid and reliable [1].
