Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and severe mental illness with high relapse, morbidity, and mortality rates despite existing evidence-based treatment options (Gitlin et al., 1995; Kilbourne et al., 2004; Novick et al., 2010). Comorbidity is common, especially with anxiety and substance use disorders, both of which have been associated with poorer course and quality of life, as well as greater likelihood of suicide attempts (Simon et al., 2004; Swann, 2010). Th e mainstay of treatment is pharmacotherapy, but augmenting psychotherapies have been developed in an attempt to improve the course of this disorder and address comorbid symptoms (Reinares et al., 2014).
