Beyond Excited About ‘Beyond 80 Percent’

I am beyond excited about “Beyond 80 Percent Accuracy” by Rebecca Moore (May 2018). I sometimes feel trapped by the typical IEP goals you see time and time again. They are wordy, overwhelming and, at times, unrelated to real-life situations. Universally, speech-language pathologists dread inheriting inappropriate, confusing or unrealistic goals from another clinician. I also think it’s a Catch-22 having SMART goals—too vague, and they are subject to interpretation; too specific, and they are typically achievable but not generalizable. Many may disagree with this view, but I really think Moore is on to something here. All of her suggested g oals feel so much more realistic and, if achieved, would show some real progress, not just an arbitrary percentage we seem to be stuck on.
