Bioavailability of coenzyme Q10 supplements depends on carrier lipids and solubilization
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an essential component of the human electron transport chain in mitochondria, and also an important lipid-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes and lipoproteins against oxidative damage [1-3]. CoQ10 (in its oxidized form, ubiquinone) can be reduced by many oxidoreductases to maintain a redox cycle [3]. In its reduced form, CoQ10H2 (ubiquinol) is able to transfer electrons to acceptors such as complex III in the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) or, for example, to α-tocopherol in other cellular membranes [3].
