Effect of a Photostimulating Treatment, in Winter, on Steroids Profile and Sexual Behavior of Light Stallions

Horses ’ reproductive activity is seasonal with a period of sexual rest during short days. In the mare, this period of complete cessation of reproduction can be shortened by a photostimulation starting near the shortest day of the years with 14h30 of light per day with a minimum of 10 lux [1]. In the sta llion, this period of sexual rest is mainly characterized by a decrease in sexual motivation [2]. However, the effect of photostimulating treatment on reproductive function of stallions, particularly on sexual behavior or testosterone level, is not clearly established: some authors found clear effec ts [3] while some others did not [4].
