Equine Placentitis Is Associated with a Downregulation in Myometrial Progesterone Signaling

A key event in preterm labor due to placentitis is the loss of myometrial quiescence and the initiation of labor. It is well known that progesterone (P4) acting through its nuclear receptor (PR) maintains uterine quiescence in most species through a blockade of the inflammatory cascade and suppression of uterine contraction. Therefore, P4 withdrawal or functional withdrawal (alteration in PR) have been implicated in labor and preterm labor. The current study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying myometrial activation during equine placentitis related to P4-PR signaling pathways.
