Enrofloxacin and Its Active Metabolite Ciprofloxacin Cross the Equine Placenta and Did not Cause Lesions in the Articular Surface of the Fetuses and Foals

The objectives of this study were to determine: (i) concentrations of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in plasma (maternal and fetal) and fetal fluids of mares treated with enrofloxacin in late-term pregnancy, (ii) if in utero exposure to enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin resulted in macroscopic or microscopic lesions in fetal membranes or tissues (liver, kidney, placenta, or articular cartilage), and (iii) if in utero exposure to enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin resulted in clinical lameness, or lesions in articular cartilage or tendons of the resulting foals.
