Alterations of the CTUP in Response to Ascending Placentitis Precede Changes in Hematologic Inflammatory Markers and Changes in Allantoic Metabolites

Ascending placentitis is one of the leading infectious causes of equine fetal demise, contributing to approximately 30% of all pregnancy loss in the United States and France (Giles et al. JAVMA. 1993;203:1170-1175 and Laguier et al. J Equine Vet Sci. 2011;31:116-123). Diagnosis of placentits is complicated by minimal premonitory signs or consistent hematologic alterations (Macpherson et. al. Vet Clin Equine. 2006;22:763-776). Metabolomics, utilizing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, can identify and quantify all products of metabolism and may allow for characterization of different pathologic states, including equine ascending placentitis (Jones et al.
