Distance to Threat and Risk of Acute and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Following Bank Robbery: A longitudinal study
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating and often long-lasting psychiatric disorder that can develop following a traumatic event (Byers et al, 2014; Kessler et al., 1995a). To understand what environmental factors increase risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is important, both in terms of preventing PTSD by reducing the impact of such factors, as well as for predicting which individuals will develop PTSD following trauma. Knowledge of who will develop PTSD could ultimately be used to target interventions soon after traumatic exposure for these individuals.
