Replacing failed implants

Dental implants have a high success rate but failures can occur. Replacement of implants where previous implants have failed is the primary approach to such failure. Although in the past a 1-year healing period was observed between implant placements, today, placement is scheduled when the socket can be prepared to eliminate thread grooves and invasive soft tissue, if the replacement is larger in diameter than the original implant, and if sufficient bone is available. Often the alveolar bone is limited in these sites, which creates a challenge for the clinician and the specter of a second failure.
