Managing patients ’ alcohol consumption

Alcohol is the second most commonly consumed drug in the United Kingdom, so it ’s important to appreciate the risk levels associated with alcohol consumption. Many oral health effects have shown relationships to alcohol use or misuse, including oral cancer, caries, periodontal disease, halitosis, tooth wear, staining, and trauma. In addition, alcohol has effects on patients’ general, social, and psychological health, which can influence dental treatment. The basic facts about alcohol use and information on the dentist’s role in caring for patients who consume alcohol were discussed.
