Oral health and dementia

Dementia and cognitive decline cause significant quality of life issues as well as health issues for the patients and families involved, caregivers, health care practitioners, and the entire health care system. The risk factors for developing dementia apply throughout the course of life and are multiple. Oral diseases such as caries and periodontal disease are more common than other chronic health conditions and increase with age. They share common risk factors with many noncommunicable diseases and can adversely affect quality of life.
