Links between oral health and systemic health

The links between oral health and systemic health are multifaceted, with complex interactions in many cases. Systemic diseases appear to influence oral health; oral health can have an impact on systemic health. Periodontitis occurs throughout the world and has some of the most prominent relationships to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The inflammation related to periodontal disease has the potential to enter the body through an inflamed area, inhalation, or ingestion. Periodontitis has recently been associated with higher mortality and increased risk for several NCDs, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and chronic renal disease.
