Prevalence of psychological distress and the effects of resilience and perceived social support among Chinese college students: Does gender make a difference?

College students undergo a developmental transition from adolescence to adulthood, which poses a great challenge for them and makes them vulnerable to mental health problems. For example, previous studies have reported that individuals aged 16 to 24 years have the highest prevalence of mental disorders (Slade  et al., 2009). Most college students are in this age group, with the highest risk of developing mental disorders. Although it seems that college students have some advantages compared with the non-students of the same age; in fact, the former have reported an even higher prevalence of mental heal th problems (Cvetkovski et al., 2012).
