Vitamin D Receptor Gene Polymorphisms Modify the Association of serum 25(OH)D Levels with Handgrip Strength in Elderly in Northern China

A loss in skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and muscle function leads to significant physical functional deterioration, metabolic impairments, disability and even death in the elderly population [1, 2]. Although some related environmental and genetic factors related to sarcopenia, such as growth hormones, resistance training, adequate protein intake, serum vitamin D level and genotypic variations (e.g., Bsm1, Fok1 and Taq1 translation site), have been proposed [3-6], there still remain many uncertainties, which are currently under investigation or study [7].
