Resveratrol enhances the efficacy of aminoglycosides against Staphylococcus aureus

The rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria is causing concern worldwide regarding the potential inability to cure bacterial infections [1]. Clinical introduction of new antibiotics based on novel chemical scaffolds has been limited [2], which has necessitated a search for other approaches to counter the problems of antibiotic resistance. An approach suggested is to re-sensitize resistant bacteria by targeting mechanisms that aid bacteria to resist higher concentrations of an antibiotic [3]. Antibiotic resistance may arise due to acquisition of resistance genes, spontaneous mutations or the bacterium may be intrinsically resistant to certain classes of antibiotics [4].
