High mortality among patients infected with hypervirulent antimicrobial-resistant capsular type K1 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains in Taiwan
Klebsiella pneumoniae are usually responsible for urinary tract infections, pneumonia, bacteraemia, and intra-abdominal infections worldwide [1]. These infections are usually considered classic K. pneumoniae infections and may occur in the community and hospital settings [1]. K. pneumonia strains causing classic infections are also able to acquire antimicrobial resistance, which is usually associated with nosocomial infection. Nevertheless, during the last several decades, K. pneumoniae has emerged as a major cause of community-acquired pyogenic liver abscesses in East Asian countries (especially Taiwan, Korea, and Singapore) [2 –4].
