Assessment of the actual light dose in photodynamic therapy

The importance of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in medicine is indisputable. The fields of application of PDT are growing fast attracting many scientists with different backgrounds leading to a myriad of treatments protocols [1,2]. Concerning the pre-clinical studies, the Web of Science database shows more than one thousand articles only in the last three years, from the date of this manuscript, reporting in vitro studies with PDT. Such multidisciplinary field and the extensive number of protocols involving different photosensitizers and light sources are in the origin of one of the major concerns in PDT: the correct assessment of the light dose.
