Medication adherence and personal determinants of health among self-neglecting older adults

Objective: Older adults who suffer from self-neglect are a growing population that is at great risk of adverse outcomes. Medication nonadherence is a large component of inadequate healthcare for self-neglecting older adults. While there is acknowledgement of this populations lack of having their healthcare needs met, understanding the reasons contributing to their gap in adequate care is largely unexplored, especially reasons related to personal determinants of health. We hypothesized that low medication adherence would be consistent with a declined health-related skill set and understanding of their health care needs.
