Accurately identifying blast injuries in civilian burn practice
A blast injury is a severe multi-system traumatic injury that may occur in tandem with any burn resulting from an enclosed or high-order explosion. Pathological sequelae can be severe, vary and affect the brain as well as any organs holding air-tissue interfaces such as the eyes, ears and lungs. Consequently traumatic brain injury, blast lung (ARDS), traumatic ocular neuropathy and conversational hearing loss are all well documented complications [1,2]. Following the recent asymmetric conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, blast injury has experienced a renaissance in interest.
